Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Who is it for?
Does the size, shape, or alignment of your nose make you feel self-conscious? Do you think your face would appear more balanced if only your nose were shaped differently? Does the internal structure of your nasal airways cause you to have difficulty breathing? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, rhinoplasty may be the right choice for you. Rhinoplasty adjusts the proportions of your nose both inside and out to give your face a balanced, proportional appearance.

Whether the shape of your nose is caused by injury or heredity, rhinoplasty can reshape, resize, and rebuild your nose to help you look your best and make you feel confident. If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and would like to learn more about nose surgery, contact Dr. Nguyen’s Arlington office at (817) 468-7000.

How does it work?
Dr. Nguyen will work with you to determine whether general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is right for you and your procedure. After sedation, he will make one of two incision types in order to access the soft tissues, cartilage, and bone that make up the structure of your nose.

  • In a closed procedure, incisions are made inside the nose.
  • In an open procedure, the incision is made across the piece of tissue separating the nostrils (the columella).

After making the incision, Dr. Nguyen will surgically reshape your nose by reducing or enhancing it. If enhancement is needed, he will graft cartilage from another part of the body (most commonly the septum, the cartilage wall running down the middle of the nose).

If a deviated septum causes you to have trouble breathing, it can also be corrected at this time. Dr. Nguyen will straighten it and make sure your airways are clear. After he has made all necessary adjustments to your nasal area, Dr. Nguyen will close the incisions.

What happens after the procedure?
You will likely have internal splints and tubes supporting your nose in its new shape after your surgery. Swelling and bruising are common during recovery, and swelling may continue during the year following your surgery, especially in the morning. Dr. Nguyen will go over with you all of the steps to take for a speedy and complete recovery, including caring for your surgery site and scheduling follow-up visits. You should be able to return to work after one week.
