Male Breast Reduction

Who is it for?
Having excess breast tissue can be a source of embarrassment for men. Gynecomastia (male breasts) is a result of enlarged mammary glands, and can be corrected with male breast reduction surgery. Men in the Arlington-Dallas-Fort Worth area who are at a stable weight, want to feel more confident, and desire a smoother, more masculine pectoral area are good candidates for male breast reduction. If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and would like to learn more about male breast reduction, please contact Dr. Nguyen’s Arlington office at (817) 468-7000.

How does it work?
Gynecomastia can be caused either by excess fat or excess glandular breast tissue and skin. In cases where it is caused by excess fat, Dr. Nguyen may be able to use liposuction only to perform the male breast reduction. To perform the liposuction, he make several small incisions, into which he will insert a cannula (a thin tube) to loosen fat in the pectoral area. The fat is then suctioned out of the body.

When gynecomastia is caused by excess glandular breast tissue or skin, excision (surgical removal) is required. Excision can also be used to reduce the size of the areola or reposition the areola and nipple. To excise the excess breast tissue, Dr. Nguyen will make an incision either under the natural fold of the breast, or around the nipple and horizontally across the breast. He will remove the tissue and reshape/reposition the breast for the most natural looking and masculine result. Some male breast reduction requires a combination of liposuction and excision.

What happens after the procedure?
After male breast reduction surgery, you will need to properly care for your incisions and the drainage tubes that may be inserted to reduce fluid accumulation at the surgery site. You may be given a special support garment to hold your chest in its new shape during the healing process. Dr. Nguyen will provide you with specific instructions for your recovery.
